A few little sketches

A few very small sketches from the 'random sketchbook' I'm trying to fill. I should stop thinking about how long this is going to take me because at the rate I normally draw I may not fill it in my lifetime! Then, when I look around my room and see all the other more-than-half-empty sketchbooks on my shelves, it's almost tempting to give up! Staying positive though, I think the only way to fill it up is to keep the sketches small and not worry about filling the whole page or making them worthy.  However, I did spend some time on the details of these brooches, below, because they belong to my mother and I really like the designs. It was only when I started drawing them and really looking at them that I noticed how minute those details were.

Mum doesn't remember anything about them so I don't think she ever bought or wore them, I think they were probably passed on to her. That's not unusual as she has a wardrobe full of things that friends and family passed around each other over the years!

I was reminded I had these brooches when I bought this necklace -

it's a cheap little thing but I loved the design. I'm always on the lookout for a nice leaf design but rarely see anything I like.

This is a little knitted cosy I saw on a bottle of fruit juice as part of a promotion and had to buy! I guess it's an egg cosy but I can't imagine why you'd want to keep an egg warm unless you like them hard boiled.

Something I've noticed and don't like about this Green & Stone sketchbook is that it has a right and a wrong (or a rough and a smooth) side and, of course, with a bound book half the pages are rough. It's OK for coloured pencil but not great for detailed pencil drawings so sketches look grainy like this one - Alex's old iPod.

Alex is the least materialistic person I know so when his old iPod broke (and it's a hand-me-down from Paul!) he was forced to replace it (he can't go anywhere without his music!) but he didn't want a new iPod Touch, he just wanted a replacement.

Finally a sketch of a soapdish. I was mulling over the Every Day in May challenge as the list of subjects to draw looks like fun. Draw a bar of soap is the first one. But I know I won't get a drawing a day done so I might just dip in and out as it will help me fill up the book.

This is the soap dish from the cloakroom (isn't that a great word?!) downstairs. It has a small sink and a small space beside it so this is the only soap dish that fits there. I don't think it was designed to be a soap dish but it's perfect for the job and made by Stephen Pearce -I've drawn one of his bowls here.

These are really great sketches, rough paper I think just added that very neat touch to it and besides I would have not noticed if you had not said anything. Love the hat, it really looks woolly and fluffy, really neat. And all the B/W sketches are very good. Really enjoyed reading the post and see all the work along it (great details).

Wonderful!!!

Thanks Mari, glad you enjoyed it! Funny, I didn't notice the paper even after doing a few sketches but for drawing a smooth object, it suddenly became obvious. I think it will be nice for certain things so it will be fun to let the paper decide, to a certain extent, what goes on the page.

I have the same problem with the paper in the Strathmore Watercolour Visual journal, Felicity. The difference between front and back of the page really spoils what would otherwise be an excellent sketchbook.

Fantastic detail in those beautiful little brooches. And such a nice story about your son's lack of conspicuous consumption.

Thanks Robyn! Yes, Alex is very unusual - even chocolate is safe in the house with him! Doesn't have a greedy bone in his body - not like me in that respect! ;)
