Charity begins at home

The drawing is of one of the ladies in Mum's old care home. Mum was moved to another one this week, closer to home, and not before time. I would have thought it was obvious that even the elderly need more than to be plonked in front of a TV, but apparently not. Even after a year there, I noticed, on a paper in her room, that they couldn't even get her name right. My brother visited a few homes to find a better one and hopefully she will be happier there. As always you have to make a fuss to change anything and I do hope that more and more people speak out about the terrible standards in some of these homes.

Such a wonderful drawing, Felicity. Really wonderful, both in line and sensitivity.

Lordy, you've touched on one of my fears about growing old. Here's hoping the new digs for your mom show a little more respect for the individual and their needs.

Hi Felicity, I'm touched by this beautiful and sensitive drawing. I have no experience...yet... of a relative in a care home but from all I've seen and read it does seem to be a bit of a lottery as to the quality of care people receive. We don't value our older people in the way we should.

Glad to see you drawing again. I know that 'lack of inspiration' feeling well. I'm in a bit of a slump myself at the mo...hmmmm.

This drawing is wonderful. It is soft and gentle and gives a kind but sad look at the elderly in a nursing home environment. I'm sorry you're having problems finding the right spot for your mother to live. I know that is so very stressful all round.

It seems to be a worldwide challenge with older people treated like some sort of large sofa cushions instead of being stimulated mentally and physically.

Sadly, this happens all too often with aged care facilities...your beautiful drawing conveys this very well. I hope your Mum is happier with the new place.

Thanks very much everyone. I think Mum will be happier in the new home as the residents look happier - a good sign. I think in general we need a fundamental change with regard to the way we view old age and the elderly. Something I have always found strange since we all, if we live long enough, will be elderly one day too and reliant on others. Thanks again for all the lovely and thoughtful comments!
