Self portrait with migraine

After the self portrait with glasses, this is the self portrait with migraine - or the closest I'll get as I felt unwell when I started it, gave up, then finished it yesterday. I love the technique this paper allows me. I can build up skin tones by almost literally scribbling. That in turn allows for a 'what if' attitude so it's ideal for getting my momentum back and because it's so quick (after fussing over the initial sketch!) I have a finished drawing in a fraction of the time it takes with graphite. I have noticed though, that the surface of the paper breaks up very easily so it doesn't allow for much erasing and fussing. I find it interesting that graphite on white paper, colour pencil on white paper and colour pencil on brown paper all seem to need a different mindset. I know it's the key to cracking watercolours but I haven't cracked that code yet!

Beautifully rendered, Felicity but there is certainly a hint of pain there too.

OMG Felicity! you have captured that look of pain just beautifully (now that didn't sound right) but what a fab job.

What kind of paper are you using?

Beautiful portrait! I like the combination of the background color of the paper and the rosy skin tones!

Oh so beautiful (the sketch and You) but I do see that pain within.

That is truly amazing - the eyes are just incredible. I'm so sorry you suffer with migraines - I thought eating low-carb helped with that, but obviously not for everyone.

I really like the way you have captured the 'looking out of yourself' feeling that one has when feeling rotten.

Do you find it easier to cope with looking at yourself so closely when in reflection? It's interesting to see the drawing close to your photograph and the hair mirrored.

I'm sorry about the migraine, but this self portrait is amazing!

Thanks everyone for the lovely comments!

Olga, I find it much easier to be objective whan looking at a photo, but this is how I see myself so I went for it despite it being a mirror image.

This is absolutely perfect and you look beautiful. I love your eyes in this. What medium were you using to sketch with and what paper? The effect is fantastic! Brilliant work...and with a migraine...even more amazing. Your comment about working from a photo that is a reverse image is intriguing. Of course the mirror image is how we see ourselves but I hadn't thought about how everyone else sees us backwards.

Thanks very much Jana! I used Lyra and Polychromos colour pencils with a white Luminance pencil for highlights on brown paper by Paperchase.

I wonder if you noticed that if you look at a face where the photo is reversed, you instinctively feel that there is something wrong eve if they are strangers? I find it fascinating that when we look at our own face in the mirror, only we see it as normal.

Migraine or no migraine, this is a wonderful drawing Felicity. So, you get the "Do you still draw?" question as well? It's incredible that people can even conjure the question, really. Getting past what people will think is not an easy thing but, at least in my case, It's the only way that I can go forward.
