Life drawing

Some art critics would argue that real art is not about making things beautiful - so they should love this! I have to say my heart sinks whenever I see this model because the resulting drawing is always bad. There is just something about her that I find difficult to capture and especially so with this pose and my sitting too close (the room was tiny). Ironic, then, that it should be a drawing of her featured in this months magazine! Apart from all that, I do feel I had more success with the colours and getting them more saturated. I put down a layer of Gold Ochre (Lyra) and it went down nice and waxy, but it was so soft and waxy that I found it difficult to put the darker colours on top. I have a feeling these Lyras are not very consistant in their properties. Not that I'm complaining really - partly it is a bit of a pain, but on the other hand it's really interesting and different getting to know a new medium, especially after years of using pencil and knowing exactly how it handles.

Felicity, your recent success is great. I am delighted for you. Your work would have attracted me as an art director because you render everything with a personal sympathy. What art directors are looking for is work which will engage the reader, complement and illustrate the text, and above all be an element of the whole presentation. The perfection which you seek is not what the art director seeks, so what might seem imperfect for you is probably just the ticket for illustration simply because it has that element of openness to companionship.

I'm not expressing myself clearly. My excuse is that I am suffering from a prolonged cold in the head which today seems to have gone to my eyes. Let me just say that your work is brilliant: it shines, and that in my opinion you have more sympathy for your subjects than the guy who won the UKCPwhatsit prize.

Thanks Teri!! SO much to master yet! ;)

Thank you Olga, I'm honoured you see my work that way. You always express yourself so eloquently - if only I could be half as eloquent even when I'm in the best of health! My eldest has been suffering for the last three weeks with the dreaded virus that has been doing the rounds. I do hope yours clears up soon. These things are so draining.
