Life drawing

It's been months since the last life drawing session and I had hoped I wouldn't be too rusty after the TV sketching I've been doing this week. But half way through this I was wondering what on earth was I doing! What's the point of using colour pencil when I know I can't finish the drawing, or even get close to what I'm aiming for, and what's the point of going back to graphite and staying in my comfort zone?

I'm not feeling down or depressed, I see the drawing as useful practice and I'm enjoying doing the TV sketches and larger portraits but I often think that having an ability to draw in this day and age is about as useful as having a talent for playing the spoons - great, but you'll never earn a living from it. This news item about a Kate Moss drawing makes me wonder not only what is the point, but what on earth is art?! Ho hum, back to the drawing board...

After reading that I get your point, but I guess for most of us drawing is self expression...not trying to make money or achieve fame. I love your drawing...but not Kate Moss'!

Thanks Sioux! Yes, I feel the same - I draw because that's who I am, what I feel I'm here to do, but I feel sad that we live in a time when staring at a computer screen in a dead end office job is better respected and rewarded than being an artist. Artistic ability is impressive only in the same way people are impressed at a party trick - a little amusement but what do you do for a living? No-one advises say, accountants or interior designers to have fun but don't expect to make any money. As soon as artists try to use their ability to make some money, they are deemed to have crossed to the dark side and are no longer true artists! I just find it bizarre. The Kate Moss drawing seems to say that anything can be art so long as celebrity is involved, even if it's just a scribble.

Point taken Felicity. I often fight with myself trying to understand my inner desire to make art and then these questions come up like "What's the use if someone else can do better". I guess it's the matter of doing what you love rather than thinking what's the use and understanding that this is leading you somewhere that not everyone can (or is brave enough) to go.
You can find competition in every area of life. Keep on working and keep on doing...and one more thing - I don't judge someone else because it's their journey not my. Their choices...not mine.
Art is in every one of us:)

Thanks very much Anetka, for the award!
Competition wasn't really what I was referring to, but how the value of the kate Moss drawing is based on her value as a celebrity not as an artist.
