Last week EDM challenge 139 was to 'draw a handle' which was convenient as I was thinking of doing this anyway. This is called a hachoir for chopping herbs and a bit of an impulse buy. It's great for herbs but anything chunkier like mushrooms or peppers get jammed between the two blades! Funny, I've never seen that happen on TV! It's by Jamie Oliver and came with a dinky little cutting board, like this one at Amazon, but unlike that board, I don't have those handy storage slots. That means it sits on the kitchen draining board until I can find somewhere safe to store it where I won't reach in and take my fingers off!
I've gone off Jamie slightly in recent weeks. I'm very fickle when it comes to celebrity chefs. I first fell for the no nonsense Delia, dumped her for Annabel (great recipes for children!), ditched her for naughty Nigel (still the best) on to Nigella (my heart wasn't really in it and all that flirting with the camera is really getting on my nerves) , then Jamie with a brief fling with Bill (why does he smile after every sentence?) I think maybe Gary is next (if only he'd drop that fake posh accent!). He's a perfectionist and I can't bear sloppy! Jamie's food is great but in his latest series he seems to have taken the rustic, careless look too far. 'Course, it might also have something to do with nearly cracking a tooth on one of his bottled pasta sauces! I doubt Gary Rhodes would have let that hard piece of whateveritwas into anything with his name on it.
Something I noticed about the rise of celebrity chefs, is that every year they use some 'in' ingredients that are probably only available in tiny specialist shops in London's Soho district. In the nineties it was things like Kaffir leaves, sun dried tomatoes, Thai fish sauce and organic chocolate. Lately I keep hearing about smoked pimento powder - we don't even have self-raising flour here! Now that supermarkets in the UK stock so many specialists foods, the chefs have to think of new things to impress us with and Jamie has taken that to extremes. In his latest show, Jamie at Home (which has cleverly latched on to the journaling craze for the opening credits, showing what appears to be his own artwork and sketchbook but is actually digitally produced for the screen) he uses only his own homegrown produce. Where are we going to find those stripey beetroots and carrots, I wonder? Or those spotty tomatoes? Not only that but he uses specially built brick ovens in his very large garden - or should that be country estate? It seems to me the most important thing about any new food craze is that it has to be, at least for now, unobtainable but Jamie is going much further and tempting us with the unattainable.
Anyway, what is really great about this drawing is that I did it in between tea breaks, probably a record for me! The wood is grainy but so too is the shine on the blades which meant it didn't need many pencil strokes to get the texture right. HB and B pencil.

The wooden handles are amazing...so...well, woody! I agree with you about celeb chefs especially Nigella who drives me nuts. I thought her latest (Nigella express) would be very useful but no not really, and I hate the way she wobbles her head and tries to be seductive, smiling and looking doe eyed to the camera. Yuck. It's full of shots of her on the bus etc doing ordinary things - as if. Isn't she married to a Saatchi chap? I don't much like any of the TV chefs to be honest, but perhaps I'm a bit of a misery guts! Quite like Nigel Slater's recipes and the Anjum Anand, Indian Every Day, ones. But mostly I live on choc.
Thanks Annabel! I was trying to be polite, you said it perfectly!! I can't even get past the ads for her show and watch the actual thing, she irritates me so much. Yes, she is absolutely loaded - I guess that may be the reason she can't stop looking so pleased with herself! ;) Actually, I do like her but the mannerisms drive me crazy - really only suitable for little girls of 6 or under!
Oh Felicity! What a delight! I too won't spend the $$ on these types of things since I don't have a 'safe' place -- but boy are they neat -- but not as NEAT as your drawing of them!
Every thing you draw is excellent and I also enjoy reading your journal. Thank you for sharing.
What a fantastic drawing. The wooden handles are fabulous! I have never been big on celeb chefs, but I do love any show done by Alton Brown... I have to stop and watch Good Eats any time I see it on :)
Truly, very impressive. I have to say your skills with a pencil are wonderful.
Isn´t this cheating? It´s got TWO handles! :) Just kidding, it´s a fantastic drawing. You are so great with textures and different surfaces, you can really tell that this thing is metal with wooden handles... Fantastic.
Yeah, I was wondering about that, Nina! ;)
Thanks all for the lovely comments!
So beautifully done Felicity! I always enjoy your comments also. Personally I enjoy watching a cooking show but I don't like to cook-go figure :)
Great Drawing.
I love Nigel Slater's and Nigella's recipes but now DH has high cholesterol (diagnosed the day I was doing Nigella's scallops with bacon lardons!) and I'm low salt there's not a recipe on the planet which not only appeals but we are also permitted to eat (grin).
Gorgeous drawing - you weren't kidding when you said you got the texture right. It's amazing! and I loved the post - makes me want to run to the cable box and see if I can find Jamie's show just to have a good snicker.
Beautifully done. Cooking gadgets are always so tempting to buy and use. Ditto with art supplies.
amazing subtle depth of value - very nicely done.
this is brilliant, just brilliant. and i have the same one. i am a Jamie fan, i find his recipes quite easy to follow, and some i use quite a lot now (minestrone soup is the best, and his chocolate tart is fabulous). but Nigel Slater is my favourite too. great recipes, also easy to follow and he seems like such a lovely man! i love Nigella's books but stopped watching her ages ago. partly found all that flirty stuff a bit too much and partly out of envy - she is drop dead gorgeous!
anyway, great drawing and you seem to be having a very creative spell at the moment. i, for one, am happy about that.
I am so thrilled with this series of everyday matters challenges. These drawings are so fresh and alive and full of personality and yet perfect as always. I adored reading this post--it was hilarious! I don't watch cooking shows but I've seen enough of them in the past to know exactly what you're talking about. Thanks for the laugh!
It looks like I could just lift them from the screen and actually use them, they are so realistic! FABULOUS drawing, Felicity!!
I'm a Jamie fan too but have missed some of his later series. I don't think we get the other chefs' shows here in Australia but will be looking out for them as I quite enjoy watching the cooking shows too.
Thanks so much everyone!
Teri, I'm like that too! I have to be in the right mood to do anything that takes a lot of time but I can watch a show anytime!
Sally, I think fate must have been telling you something! ;)It's a real pain not being able to eat what you want though.
Serena, I'm surprised you haven't seen Bill's Food since he's an Ozzie? Lovely scenery around Sydney and the sun is always shining! ;)
Love your handle drawing. It's beautiful and very original.
Fantastic! I love how you made the difference between wood and steel.
I have never seen Nigel, but I love Jamie too (even if I must forgive him fro some of his spanish recipes) specially his series of the schools were very interesting. I'm just an amateur but almost all the spanish and italian recipes made by Nigella made me laugh (not so much after a few I gave up).
I have a hachoir too, but I prefer a good knife.
Wow! The first thing I noticed was the wood handles. Awesome, amazing work. You are truly talented.
