EDM # 23 Draw your foot

Perhaps this drawing should come with a warning - some people are strange about feet and mine are not pretty!

When you post your drawing, EDM asks that you journal your feelings on the subject and thinking about it I have quite a lot to say about feet! I don't think I've ever had a compliment about mine, plenty of jokes about how big or long or knobbly my toes are but of all the things about myself I would like to change and worry about, surprisingly my feet are not one of them. They are what they are and if I did hate them, what could I do anyway? And besides, they have some great shapes and shadows to draw! If there is any foot I'd like to draw more, it's my brother's - his are like mine but even more exaggerated. So far he has declined but I see that Alex's feet are getting interesting!

If there is one subject that bores and angers me quicker than people telling me how busy they are, it's women who want to tell me how 'awful' it is to have small feet. Not the ones who have genuine trouble finding shoes but the ones who simply want to draw attention to their feet. Funny that they are usually the same women who like to complain about their boobs! They may as well just come out and say how much they love their 'tiny' (they are always 'tiny' aren't they?) feet and big boobs because it's obvious that's what they mean. I would be just as impressed to hear them go on about their pointy elbows or floppy earlobes!

My feet have been about a size 5 since I was a teenager. When I was working I wore court shoes all the time until I got married and moved to Norway to join Mark. For the first time I started wearing trainers and after a year I noticed my feet had spread! So now they are slightly wider I have trouble finding comfortable shoes which is literally a pain. Coming to Geneva, they have gone through another change. After going everywhere by car in Kuwait, I thought all the walking here would be good exercise. But now I have tendinitis in the inside of my left foot. I read that this can be brought on by suddenly taking up exercise - that's not common knowledge until it's too late!

Well, I think I've wasted enough of your time about my feet. The drawing represents a good use of my time though since I picked it up whenever I sat in front of the TV! HB and B pencil.

Nice drawing, and the feet aren't bad either! Always enjoy your pencil drawings.

Felicity -- your drawing is phenomenally excellent! Shading, contours, shadows ... it is outstanding!

I chuckled about your comments about women who complain about their little feet or ample bosoms - right! You hate your thick curly hair too! Such ploys for attention are tiresome. But your drawing of your feet is anything except tiresome. It is lovely indeed, shaded beautifully. Oh my. I'm feeling inadquate here...

Awesome detail! I need to try to redo this very similar composition that I did in 1996:

Your feet look beautiful to me...Fantastic drawing!
I'm a size 3 and I love having small feet. Size 5 isn't big, it's average isn't it?

WONDERFUL drawing...the subtlety you produce is astonishing. I also love your comments and I whole-heartedly agree with your opinion about the small-feet complainers.

I like feet - any feet! Nothing like taking a warm footbath and some acupressure or a good massage! I mostly wear roomy, comfortable shoes, and my feet have expanded accordingly! :-)

:-D Your description of your feet and talk about the things we hate about ourselves was a hoot! Actually I think your feet look fine! And your drawing is wonderful!

Thanks all! Glad I didn't scare you off!

Serena, I don't use those but they are pretty useful. I lay down very light 'washes' of pencil and build on those. I used my finger lightly in places on this one but generally I prefer not to.

Sherry, you obviously know the sort I mean! ;)

Mattias, those high heels are probably to blame.

Anita, yep, mine are average but you'd never think it from the comments I've had! I guess since I'm short maybe they are disproportionately large.

Anna I agree, they are such weird and wonderful things and great subjects for drawing so the more unusual the better. I love soft comfy shoes too but once you get into those there is no going back! Have you tried reflexology - it's fabulous too!

Beautiful work! My mom and I used to joke that the boxes fit us better than the shoes! Thanks for sharing the amazing sketch - and your journalling!

I am so impressed with the subtlety of your shading and the depth of view...a feat not easily duplicated (!).

This is the best drawing of feet I've ever seen. They way you captured the slight impression/movement of the flesh above the ankle where it leans on the other leg is amazing. What's even more thrilling about this is that you did it from life rather than from a photo. You are a phenomenal artist! ...and about feet--I wear a woman's size 11 (European 42) on my right foot and a size 11 1/2 (which don't exist) on my left. So I end up having to buy 12s (European 43). Also my big toe is 1/2" longer than the rest of my toes, making it even harder to fit. I've worn mostly men's shoes in a size 10 or 10 1/2 for years. When I was a San Diego surfer girl in high school I begged for my own board and my father used to tease me and say I could just use my feet, they were so big. Of course he wore size 13 or 14 so he knew what it was like. Gosh...I could go on and on, but this is your post not mine. Now I guess I better draw some feet and write about it on my own blog!

Thanks again! Jana, that's an amazing compliment, thank you! Since human beings coming in all shapes and sizes and we are not symetrical (!) it really is a wonder that we have clothes and shoes in such limited sizes, don't you think? It wasn't that long ago when jeans were only designed to fit men!

I think your feet are great. This is an awesome drawing. The blending is beautiful, the shadows make interesting shapes themselves. This is so well done. My feet are like yours. I was about a sizse 5 for years, then when I quit working and was home with the kidsa ll the time, there was no reason to wear dress shoes and I began wearing moccasins and sandals and my feet have spread. I don't mind as I don't wear dress shoes any more unless we go out for dinner (once or twice a year). I am perfectly comfortable in my casual togs. lol! You may not consider your feet 'pretty', but at least you don;t have to shave yours! I have hairy feet!
