Good drawing session, bad week

A strange thing happened at life drawing yesterday. I hadn't picked up a pencil all week, I had been rushing around a DIY shop with Mark before the life class (at an unearthly hour of the morning for me!) so I had to rush to get there in time. I sat down, opened the sketchbook and just plunged right in. No settling myself, checking angles and measuring, no deep breaths and emptying my mind of all other things, I just picked up the pencil and drew, and amazingly it all seems to fall into place. I think I'm happier with these two drawing than with any of the others I've done. This week I concentrated on lines. I added a little shading and I was happy with the composition so I left it here and started another.

The poses look quite different without the second hand, I think. I tried to give the lines some varying weight. Some of my figures have looked almost like cut-outs but I feel I've made some improvement here. The hand draped on the back of the chair gave me some trouble - at first it looked like a tarantula and I was tempted after a while to simply rub it out and forget it, but with a bit of perseverence it's not too bad although it could be better! HB and 3B pencil.

Fate had a laugh at my expense this week. I'm back to square one, with perhaps a busy week ahead, as a migraine made a timely appearance and put paid to my plans. Oh well, the world is still turning. Perhaps I'll give myself more time and try and see if I can't manage a few sketches along the way!

The moon must be playing tricks on us, Felicity -- My week has been over-the-top busy as well .. and yet, your lines, cara, are exquisite -- as usual ... beautiful shading -- just enough for form and substance. Wonderful work .. hope this week is a little easier for both of us -- and your headaches subside quickly!

these are wonderful. Good proportions and shading and I like the outline style!

I think there is the secret Felicity, you had to no time to mentally prepare so these great sketches came from an open mind. And they ARE great!

your proportions are always perfect. You have quite the eye. The line work is very nice in the second one. Something to be said about working from the heart and soul, rather than the brain.

I agree with you Felicity...these are also my favorite life drawing sketches of yours. They are really beautiful.

I find it funny that you compared your hand to a tarantula. I think this "spidery" appearance is why I avoid drawing open hands. However, you've done a fine job here.

Thanks very much everyone!

They are wonderful, Felicity.
The thing I like about them is that they are not over worked with the shading.
I find I do better drawings when I'm a little stressed and have many other things on my mind.

Couldn't find an e-mail address for you to let you know I finally have some pictures of my black lab for you. They are on my Yahoo photo page in the album "Jesse" here: http://photos.yahoo.com/idahobeautyinwi

She wasn't doing a very good job of posing, keeping her short little ears pinned back. I like the ones of her lying on the floor, reminding me of your "life drawing" models!

I made an interesting discovery while doing this. Even though she is black, the light reflects off her hair creating different values. I don't think I ever really noticed that before. So maybe drawing a black pet will not be as easy (or boring) as I thought.

Have fun!

Hi Felicity,

I found your blog from Tommy's blog ...he recently posted this beautiful sketch of yours on his site. And, I would agree, you're very talented. I really love the simple and graceful line of your pencil work in these sketches...very delicate looking. And the anatomy is looks right on target. Great life drawing!

Ana
