Hair raising sketches

Decisions, decisions. To post some sketchy sketches or leave the blog looking neglected? This little dog isn't going to be finished any time soon because his hair is driving me mad! So I've put him aside for a while and decided to take a leaf out of David Malan's book and go through papers and magazines looking for faces to practice sketching every day.

Looking for faces with interesting angles and trying not to overwork them or fuss about getting a true likeness.

One problem that never seems to go away is getting the two eyes to match! If I could just master that I'd never complain again - it seems like a problem one should have as a schoolkid, not an adult. One always looks fine, usually the right, the other has to be worked at.

This is a quick sketch of Nicole Kidman, in the papers for visiting Geneva recently promoting watches. I always think if a woman pushes her hair back with her hands like this, she has spent hours in front of the mirror, perfecting 'the look' (not her, her stylists of course) and is afraid to touch anything lest she spoil the effect. A gesture often seen at premiers and award ceremonies!

Hopefully there will be more drawings soon but as it has become bitterly cold here (although I am a bit of a wimp if the temperature goes below 20C!) and I have a very strong urge to hibernate!

The dog's hair might be a challenge, but wow! It's looking fantastic!

Fantastic, indeed. As a matter of fact, if it were me drawing it, I'd call him done...:-D

I love the angle on the girl's portrait - very challenging, I would imagine!

Yep, I too feel like curling up under a nice warm blanket and forgetting about everything for a while. Love the doggy!! I think he's gorgeous as he is, and doesn't need anything else, but you're the expert!!

Thanks all for the lovely comments! The face is not far off done but I'm doing a full body drawing so there is a fair bit of hair left to do!

Love the whisps of fur and the personality that shines through. And the interesting angle on the girl. Good work!

I have to agree with the others who say these images all seem finished. A really beautiful selection. I especially like the yorki.

I also like your comment about how Nicole Kidman is pushing her hair back ever so carefully. Can you imagine being in a position that this is something you have to worry about?

These are really amazing! About the eyes matching, I've read that the eyes should never match--that one should be the focal point and be more detailed while the other should be softer focus and less prominent so that the viewer doesn't have to pick which eye to look at, just as in real life we tend to only look at one eye at a time. This is supposedly true of people or animals.

Great idea -- to just keep sketching without worrying too much about likeness. Heads tilted are, to me, one of the hardest things to capture. I marvel at Michelangelo for that very reason.
