Jessica asked about the Winsor & Newton sketchbook I was raving about on EDM. I bought the little one a while back, thought it would be absolutely perfect if they would make something like it in square format and a few weeks later my dream came true! I couldn't find a picture on the Winsor & Newton site (someone ought to get their act together with that site - and the same goes for Daler Rowney, Faber Castell and Berol. I love their stuff but do they actually want anyone to buy it?) and only a small photo of the smallest size. (It comes in a larger 6x8 ins as well as this 8x8 ins squared version).

I've photographed it against my A3 pad to show the size more clearly. I'm not sure exactly how heavy the paper is but it's not thin, probably 120gsm or thereabouts. The pages fold out flat without the ridge you get with the Moleskines.
It has a little ribbon as you can see but also a pocket inside the back cover that a lot of books seem to have as standard now.

Thanks for posting this! Those DO look like cool sketchbooks... how do they compare with the other WN sketchbooks that I posted on the EDM list?
Looks like the paper for the black bound ones can take watercolor... looks like the paper for the leather bound one is a wee bit lighter: 150 gm vs 170... that said, I'm planning to make a sewn journal of my own using several different types of papers...some canson ingres, watercolor (diff types), etc... :)
Cheers,
Jessica
Is that leather? What's the tooth of the paper like? How much do you have to wrestle to keep it open?
I love the large square one!
what a great book...do you think there will be a run on them as we all "Need" them?:>
Oh! They look wonderful. I thought I'm over my fear of starting to actually use a sketchbook. But I don't know wether I could really use such beauties :)
Jessica, the paper is definitely heavier with these than the black hardcover books. My black hardcover W&N is 110gsm/50lb and these are 70lb according to the website I mentioned on EDM (I don't know what that weight is - maybe 150gsm?)
r.e., the tooth is wonderful for pencil. It's certainly not smooth like a Moleskine. It's like the Daler or W&N cartridge paper I normally use. No wrestling to keep it open at all, the paper lies quite flat. It's a very soft leather as far as I know. I've seen it described as leatherette - is that a fake leather? It feels very soft and smooth whatever it is! Slightly mat sheen, not shiny or tacky at all.
Maggie, maybe we should all get together and badger art suppliers to always make quality books like this!
Renate, this is a big problem for me too but I started my small one yesterday after reading your post - thank you. I think these are definitely the nicest skechbooks I've come across and that square one is going to be a challenge to start!
If you are still interested I found these great sketch books online at Heaton Cooper Studio Ltd search for Winsor & Newton Artist's Journal. I first found them in London this Sept 2007 and LOVED them. hope they come to usa as shipping is high , but worth it :0
