Quick sketches

It doesn't look like I'll get much drawing done this week so I think I need to do some more quick sketches. Drawing cats has made me realise how comfortable I've become drawing portraits of people. With cats I feel like I have to go right back to basics - it's not enough to just draw what I see, understanding the structure underneath is essential. It wasn't until I started drawing them that I realised how much they vary and how little I really knew about them!

Your notes on this one are very enlightening. I believe this is also why I struggle when drawing humans...I don't know what is underneath.

It never ceases to astonish me how much one can see of what's going on inside from looking hard at the movement of the outside. It is a constant challenge to me to try to capture as much as possible with as little as possible. You achieve that so often. Each of these drawings shows an individual: a portrait rather than an excercise, no matter how 'finished'.

Thanks also for the fascinating link.

Hi Felicity,
These are just wonderful! I'm starting to have the same realization about my own drawings. I love it when people share process. Thanks for the note on my blog. That was a nice way to start the morning.

Felicity--What I love about your work is the strength of your lines combined with such masterful contouring. The eye seems to float along your images, yet be completely drawn in at the same time.

I love what you say about cats, too. I haven't ventured into the animal world at all, so I really admire how much you can capture of the cat's soul.

Love the "quick" sketches. The lines are already so well established and the shapes so spot on.
And your observation about drawing cat is profound -- that's probably why i've only sketched my cat sleeping.
Oh, and i am deeply annoyed at Blogger, which won't let me leave comments under anything but a Blogger identity. :-(

Oh, how lovely your lines and shapes are. You seem to be a master at drawing cats and don't need to learn another thing!

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the lovely words, so encouraging!

Potato Print, I try to share although sometimes it may sound like I'm very confident or maybe arrogant (I read that on someone's blog about sharing process!) I'd love to see more artists talking about their work, I'm always wondering about the process behind the image.
