Cats and dogs

I took a stroll downtown with my camera yesterday hoping to see some of the weird and wonderful dogs that people take shopping with them. Of course, all the dogs caught wind of this and stayed at home and the first animal I saw was a cat! This man is a regular site on the main shopping street and whenever I see him it's without my camera so I made a beeline for him.

The first thing he asked was if I was a professional photographer because I had a filter on my lens. Apparently of all the people with expensive cameras that take his photograph, very few protect their lenses. Too much money, he said. I stopped to chat and he told me that everyone is in a rush, few stop to talk, "they are all rushing - rushing to their graves!" He spoke English perfectly, was very intelligent, had travelled around the world so I guess he is doing this because he wants rather than needs to. I was amazed that every time I see him his cat is either sleeping or oblivious to the crowds but apparently this one, Toulouse, is just one of the many cats that come out with him!

As I walked past the market I spotted these little dogs behind the stalls. The little girl thought they might be for sale but they belonged to one of the stallholders. There must have been seven or eight altogether.

I couldn't resist including this photo even though it's slightly out of focus - the little dog on the left is so adorable, he reminded me of Sweep, Sooty's little friend! (Sooty and Sweep are hand puppets in a long running children's TV programme in the UK. Sooty is silent although completely understood by his owner, Sweep squeaks and causes mayhem!)

This little one's expression is so funny, almost resigned!

A little black one sleeping while the others enjoy all the attention they're attracting and getting tangled up in their leads!

I swear all these little huts selling chestnuts weren't there last week. I really must remember to hold my camera straight!

Geneva has a fine range of tacky souvenirs. Must be sold to those people who don't have filters on their lenses!

WHAT FABULOUS PHOTOS!! The one of that handsome man is wonderful!! And mercy, all those dogs!!!! I used to be able to get roasted chestnuts when I lived in NY -- but here ....NADA! Once in a while around Thanksgiving to Christmas, the unroasted ones are in the grocery stores ... A friend of mine had a tree and we used to collect BAGS and BAGS of the nuts -- I even made chestnut bread from the bounty when I could get them -- YUMMY!!!

Great Photos!! Love love love the little dogs!! And isn't it funny that tacky souvenirs are really a universal phenomenon! I just got back from the tacky capital of Tennessee - it just gets better and better!

What a lovely virtual stroll with you around Geneva! I particularly like the photo of the man with his cat - and all of those little dogs! (What can I say... I love animals!) The fountian and the bird's eye view from the Church tower were spectacular! You live in a beautiful city, Felicity. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Felicity,
I really enjoyed catching up on your blog and seeing all the photos. My favorite is the man and his cats with the lovely carved box--so much nicer than our shopping cart people. The little dogs are adorable too. Loved your funny commentary. Thanks for the little tour!
