Life drawing

When I walked out of yesterdays life drawing class I thought there is no way these drawings will make it to my blog, even to be brave and talk about posting my bad stuff. I just couldn't get into the rhythm of it during the session. I put them away and decided to look at them in the morning and maybe they won't look quite so bad. Hmm. I didn't really expect that to happen but it did. I quite like the more sketchy quality these have compared to my first attempts. The one above is the one I stuck to (after a couple of awful warm-up sketches).

This is the quick sketch I did 15 minutes before the end. I turned the pencil on it's side to do the shading (because I thought they were too crappy to spend time on) and found I like that chalky kind of look and the way it contrasts with the darker, sharper line. I'm not sure that it shows very well on the scans but anyway, these sketches have got me out of the funk I was in this week.

My hubby must have sensed the note of glee in my last post because he's coming home tomorrow (a week early)! Good thing too, because I should have had lots of photos to post to the blog today and I managed to download them to the wrong program and can't retrieve them for editing! So when the computer whizz gets home, I'll be posting photos of the painting en plein air event that I went along to see in town. Seeing artists at work certainly gave me something to think about with regard to my own work.

OH, Felicity!! I JUST LOVE LOVE LOVE THESE!! Simple lines, pure perfect shading -- gloriously simple and elegant and perfect!!! I'm so glad you posted these -- yes, a bit different style from you -- but so 'felicity' in perfect lines and shading -- they SING, my friend ...!!!

These really are beautiful Felicity. Sometimes we are our worst critics.

Edmund Dulac is great! I love his Arabian Nights stuff. I also enjoy Arthur Rackham :)

Your drawings are very strong. Your contour lines are what I like best. I understand what you mean about getting in rhythm, but I think you are a little harsh on yourself. You have a very clean and wonderful line; and great drawings overall.

Are you familiar with Tony Ryder? I see some familiarity with your work and his.

You can really do anything! I love to see your sketches, and they awe me. Then I read your comments, and they seem more self-disparaging than mine! Anyway, please keep working and posting, in spite of your doubts. It's inspiring for the rest of us.

You've sort of condensed the person to simple lines which I think have given spontaniety and life, and like everyone else, I wish I could have done them!

I know what it is like when you are dissatisfied with your own work, but often it is just one's mood that gets in the way of one's judgement. I particularly like the collarbones and neck on both drawings, and the feet on the full length view.

I hope you're liking these better now. They're really lovely and intriguing. There's something very sensitive about your line and shading that adds personality to an already beautiful drawing. I hope to see more--these are lovely.

Felicity, I really really like the turn of the leg in the top one. You captured the shape and shadows so well. And in the second one I really (really)like the throat and collar bones. There is an honest in these which is very endearing. I think you should be very pleased with both of them. :o) You make me want to go back to my LD classes.

The fact that you were embarassed in the first place absolutely blows my mind. These are gorgeous. I especially like the second one. You have such a great way of fading out of the detail into a line drawing.

I'm so glad that you'e being less self critical and prepared to show the work that you think is less than perfect. (Which of course none of us would agree with anyway)
