Self portrait marathon

What do you think - is it better to let a picture speak for itself or offer an explanation?

This one started off as a simple line drawing with my favourite cup but as it went on it gathered momentum. What does it say about me? Since I'm not feeling mysterious today, I'll tell you! The cup is full of tea - I love tea and right now I see the world as half full not half empty. Same old dress - I wear the same few things over and over. Being only 5' has something to do with it, I can never find things I like. Old watch - I used to wear Omegas but they let me down. This is a Marks and Sparks circa 1996 and still going strong!(Read - low maintenance!) Pencil - self explanatory, love drawing. Skull - hints at another of my favourite artists, Holbein. I love Michelangelo for his passion and Holbein for his cool detachment (at least, that's how I see it). I won't tell you whose CD it is but it also refers to my very broad taste in music - there's very little I dislike if I'm in the right mood. Unpainted nails - I'm not a girlie girl! Moleskine - new discovery and it's growing on me. The position of the hands and perhaps the picture as a whole reminds me of something else - what I'd like to be in the next life (not that I believe in an afterlife!). OK bit of mystery there and probably a bit obscure. Here's a hint - it's the exact opposite of what I am!

The marathon runs until the 8th, check Sparky's (excellent!) blog for the all the self portraits.

FANTASTIC as ususal, Felicity!!! We are members of a very elite group --- those of us under 5'2"!!! I am 5' 1", no girly girl, and I tend to wear my most wore out things at home and around the garden. I want to be free to sit on the floor or ground, romp with the grands, or just RELAX!

What a wonderful piece! It's so personal and yet so universal.

I am also happy to see you used your portrait for your photo.

Your pencil portraits are very nice!! You have such a light touch!! I like the idea of interpreting portrait more broadly than just your face!

How imaginative is that. I love it!

Nice drawing. Now I'm curious what you want to be in your next life... My best guess is a tall monk... How on earth did I arrive at this conclusion? Well, a tall male would be your opposite, and somehow I can picture a monk with his hands around a cup of tea... LOL!

Right with the tall male Anna but certainly not a monk!

I really love these latest pencil "portraits" of the hands. Wonderful rendering of a difficult subject! And I think they are quite as 'portrait-ish' as the others! Quite charming.

I'm glad your mum is recovering well and that you got to visit. And I also enjoy your gorgeous photos - I can't wait to see what you do with the glorious flowers. And the ornaments are a hoot - but I am quite smitten with the little bird house.
