Tulips

I was tempted to make this drawing my response to 'draw a sign of spring' but I've decided against it. It feels like cheating because I drew it before I read the list of challenges. (Silly I know!) Actually, I intended it to be a more complete study but it was amazing how quickly those flowers were opening! I couldn't keep up with them!

Tulips are my favourite flowers and too expensive to buy in Kuwait so this was a rare treat! My favourite tulip is a variety of Parrot Tulip called Rococo. I'm not sure what it is about them but I saw these for sale outside a florist in Aberdeen about seven years ago and the beauty of them knocked me out. I was hoping this little bunch might be similar as the buds were red with a hint of green at the edges but they turned out to be very different. Still, they were very pretty so I drew them but it was the unusual shapes of the leaves and the way they curled and split that caught my interest.

Wonderful drawing. I also enjoyed all of your life drawings, you have a nice mastery of tonal control.

Nice drawing - it comes across as stylised rather than unfinished to me. Tulips are one of my favourite flowers too - and I agree they're a real challenge to draw! But I can't get enough of them at this time of year!
