I know this is an unconventional response to draw something holiday themed/Christmas but this was my first response and, after thinking about it, I think I'll go with it. I might have time to do something a bit more jolly in the next couple of days.
I do love Christmas but...to cut a long story short (and to try and keep out of trouble!) I think Christmas should be less about spending and more about giving. I've drawn a child's face as there are so many suffering around the world and Christmas should be a wonderful time for them. But sadly, Christmas day comes and goes, too much food and drink is consumed, too much money spent but the poor and the hungry are still poor and hungry.
Sorry for the depressing post, I'll try and get another drawing up in a day or two!

What a beautiful drawing!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS ABSOLUTELY DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS!!!! Don't you EVER doubt that YOU are one heck of an ARTIST!!!!!! FANTASTIC work - your shading is beyond realistic, the child rendered adorable and winsome ... Can you hear my jaw drop in delight?? INCREDIBLE work!!!
It's a beautiful drawing and the theme... appropriate. I mean, it's good to be happy around the holidays, but also to remember that everybody deserves to be happy (not just around the holidays) but not everybody gets that chance. Which is sad, really, because if we all worked on being truly happy and helped others be happy, too, the world would be a much better place.
I don't think there is anything wrong with going with your gut instinct, even if it may be interpreted as depressing. I very much agree with your sentiment. And I think the drawing is beautiful, by the way.
Great drawing.
And although understanding what you say about Christmas I would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and the best for 2006.
Felicity, you are not alone in your interpretation. The truth is the truth, depressing or not. There are plenty of festive and joyful words and images everywhere, so I think the evocative image and words you have beautifully rendered are completely appropriate, and necessary, I might add. I wouldn't feel pressured to post another "happy" entry unless you really want to. With that, I send you best wishes for a wonderful holiday and the best new year.

Gorgeous drawing, just stunning! What a talent you have.
Exquisite! Your talent leaves me breathless Felicity. :o)
Your drawing goes without saying that it is amazing. Your message is even more important and art is away to get your message across. I believe that you do not need to change your message to something less depressing - go with your gut instinct, this was your first impression and I would say you were right to put it out there and your art is a way to do that.
The subject you have chosen is undoubtedly appropriate for Christmas. I so agree that the whole festival has become ridiculously indulgent and commercialised. I believe that one should put one's money where one's beliefs are and give to a good charity - enough that it feels like too much, and ask all those from whom one receives gifts to give the money to charity instead.
On the other hand, the more we spend the more work we provide for the poorer parts of the world.
But all this thinking apart, it is still possible to have a good time oneself.
I think since as artists we tend to be less materialistic, Christmas feels burdensome. Thanks for articulating this.
Love the drawing too.
Very appropriate. It's very nice to know that others share the same thought during this time.
It's a beautiful portrait, Felicity. Thanks for sharing this one.
I look forward to your other drawings as well. :)
